National Nurses Week
National Nurses Week honors all of the indispensable nurses throughout our country. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th – the famous nurse Florence Nightingale's birthday.
In 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation for National Recognition Day for Nurses, stating “Scientific advancements in recent years have dramatically expanded the role of nurses in our health care system, and their knowledge and skills have increased to keep pace with new technologies and methods of treatments. Yet, the very core of nursing—caring for patients—remains unchanged. Nurses bring a special compassion and concern for the patient and for the patient's family. Nurses play a vital role in educating people in how to avoid illness and promote good health.”
Throughout history, nurses have been at the front lines of all major health care challenges our society has faced – wars, epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters and so much more. Not only are nurses providing critical care during extraordinary circumstances, they are also trusted advocates who ensure individuals, families, and populations receive quality patient care and emotional support.
