Radon in the Summer Time

Radon is an odorless, tasteless, invisible, radioactive gas that naturally occurs in the environment. It is caused by the natural decay of uranium in the soil and when outside, it isn’t a health concern. If it seeps through basement or foundation floors, it can increase risk for home occupants in developing lung cancer. Local radon testing results has shown that approximately 47% of tests are over the EPA action limit for radon (4 pico-curies per liter) and are at cancer causing levels.

For a long time, it was assumed that radon was really only a concern in the winter time as homes were shut tight to keep out the cold. Recently, we have learned that radon can be a problem in the summer heat as well when homes are shut tight again. Research has shown that rain events increase the dissipation of radon from the ground and further increase the concentration in homes. It is important to remember that radon can be a serious problem in any season of the year when homes are sealed up.
